The Guarantors of Brain offer three types of fellowships. Click on the link for general Terms and Conditions of these fellowships.
These fellowships provide bridging salary support for up to one year to early career clinicians based in the United Kingdom. The scheme is intended to provide transitional funding prior to obtaining a research fellowship (for a higher degree, PhD or MD). Funding covers the full time basic clinical salary (including superannuation, national insurance and London weighting) on the Specialist Registrar scale according to age and experience, up to a maximum of £70,000, pro rata, inclusive. It is recommended that applicants contact their finance or administration team in advance, to provide accurate figures and ensure that the institution will be able to manage the award.
Applicants must be eligible for, or engaged in, neurology, neurosurgery and neurophysiology or psychiatry higher specialist training in the UK (including MRCP or equivalent for the different specialties). The candidate must demonstrate their intention of a career in clinical academia, plus clear prospects to secure a definitive training post, research fellowship or lectureship for clinical academic training in the UK. Entry fellowships are not intended to fund one year MPhil or MSc studies.

The Post doctoral clinical fellowship provides salary support for up to one year to early/mid-career clinicians based in the United Kingdom. The scheme is intended to provide funding after completion of a higher degree (PhD or research MD). The fellowship may follow immediately on completion of a PhD, or be taken after an interval of clinical training.
Funding covers the full time basic clinical salary (including superannuation, national insurance and London weighting) on the Specialist Registrar scale according to age and experience, up to a maximum of £80,000 pa pro rata. It is recommended that applicants contact their finance or administration team in advance, to provide accurate figures and ensure that the institution will be able to manage the award. Applications for part time research are welcomed, if the fellowship is the only employment, but applications for split funding between research and clinical training will not be considered.
Applicants must be engaged in, neurology, neurosurgery, neurophysiology or psychiatry higher specialist training in the UK (including MRCP or equivalent for the different specialties). The candidate must demonstrate their intention and prospects of a career in clinical academia. The post-doctoral clinical fellowships are not intended for extending three-year PhD posts or clinical fellowships which have run behind schedule. Rather, the Guarantors of Brain require evidence of added value and new research. This may include the pursuit of new discoveries arising during the course of a PhD/MD. Candidates just reaching their CCST are eligible to apply but established consultants or academics in faculty positions are not eligible. The new non-clinical post-doctoral fellowships provide salary support for up to three years to non-clinical postdoctoral career researchers who are working in clinical neuroscience setting in the United Kingdom. Successful candidates will demonstrate their interest in bringing basic science approaches to bear on key problems in clinical neuroscience.
The Fellowship must be undertaken after completion of a PhD or equivalent higher degree, to commence no more than six years from the PhD.
Funding consists of full time salary up to a maximum of £70,000 pa (including national insurance, superannuation and London weighting if relevant). Only salary support is provided, not consumables or travel expenses.
The Fellowships are intended to support research that is embedded in a clinical neuroscience setting, typically in clinical neurology and its related specialties, and research with clear goals for clinical translation. The candidate should demonstrate a long-term commitment to a career in clinical neuroscience.
This Fellowship is not open to clinically qualified researchers, who should instead consider the Brain Post Doctoral Clinical Fellowship (above). It is not open to those who intend to pursue a neuroscience project outside a clinical neuroscience setting or outside of the UK. Informal contact with the Secretary and Treasurer of Brain is welcomed, to discuss an application and eligibility. The final decision on eligibility rests with the Guarantors of Brain.
The application must be sponsored by a clinician neuroscientist who is research active in the same academic institution, and be supported by the Head of Department or Director of the institute in which the research is to be undertaken . Click here for general Terms and Conditions.
