Trainee Neurologists in Basic Neuroscience PhD programs

The previous scheme for "Salary Support to Trainee Neurologists in Basic Neuroscience" has been withdrawn in 2015.

Instead, we offer a competitive prize for Trainee Neurologists who are undertaking a PhD in a recognised PhD Training Program with a non-clinical stipend. The Prize comprises £10,000 in each of three years (four in the case of a 4-year PhD program).

The scheme is intended to support talented young clinicians who wish to combine clinical training with basic research. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis, in parallel with Entry and Post Doctoral Fellowships. Priority will be given to candidates who can demonstrate long-term academic commitment.

Applicants must be eligible for or engaged in Neurology higher specialist training in the UK (ST3 level or above, after MRCP PACES  or equivalent). The candidate must be able to demonstrate the intention to have a career in clinical neurology or related specialties, plus good prospects to secure a definitive training post, research fellowship or lectureship in clinical neurology in the UK (or related specialties of paediatric neurology, neurophysiology, neurosurgery).

The Prize is conditional on (i) staying in full time study, unless by agreement with the Guarnators of Brain in the case for example of serious illness or maternity leave; (ii) completion of the PhD within four years, to the time of submission of the thesis; (iii) not undertaking paid work as a medical officer, or locum clinical work. Particpation in a low-intensity on-call specialty rota is permitted.

Contact The Secretary of the Guarantors of Brain (using the contact form) in the first instance to discuss.

If you wish to apply for a grant, you will need to sign up for an account or log in with an existing one.
